The server pinging approach is a bit techie for most people, but a great idea. What Cu sez about pinging the server should work-and be pretty lethal to the servers too. Indeed more effective and efficient than lots of people reloading. But it requires people to get closer to their computers than they may be used to. It's very easy, yet an unfamiliar procedure for most people. I'll do the ping thing tho & anyone comfortable with creating & running a batch file should do it too.
: I can't see why are you reloading the pages?
Because reloading is something everyone is comfortable with. Even tho, it's easy, not everyone is conformable with creating batch files.
Cü, why not take the few minutes to create the 5 or so batch files and post them, instructing people how to take them & run them. People not used to creating batch files would be more likely to try it that way. Besides most people don't know what you're talking about. Pinging servers isn't part of most conversations.
Most web servers have a
: setting stg like "Maximum number of connections"... You can connect to
: a server atmost specified on the server, say 128.
This confuses me. I confess ignorance in server processes, but isn't our goal simply to tie up all possible target server connections? And since we are doing this from our individual remote locations, won't the reloading plan grab the, say 128, connections? This would meet our goal.
: Besides, the browsers have an internal limit of maximum simultaneous
: connections, as far as I know, Communicator's is 8!
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't understand what the browser limit has to do with this. I'll have 1 browser open from my connection. So as I reload, I don't create new connections, unless I open other windows, right?
You can check it by
: pressing CTRL-T "while" loading a page.
What? I pressed CTRL-T while a page was loading. I was in the NN4.0 browser, and I didn't see any special information. Where exactly do I look for this information? I know I'm just not doing what you intended me to do here.
: What do we have now? Everybody can connect to server with, say, 16
: connections, and server is set to handle 256 connections simultaneously.
: Only 16 people can reload the page at once. This does not work!
Why doesn't this work? We want to tie up the connections. In your example, 16 people will connect and all others will not. That's the point. We are making it so that people can't get to these target servers. By reloading (or yes, better yet pinging) we limit access to these servers to ourselves.
