What I like about the French is they have a tradition of street demonstrations and social agitation that goes back to the revolution. The French have an ingrained sense of group gatherings that add whole dimension to their art & discourse. Somehow it cycles in France. Revolt-Breakdown-Discussion-New Order-Repression- Revolt. Somehow it's the fluid by which the people get out of themselves and confront each other. In America the idea of revolt or separatism becomes the basis for a new market and a new commodity. The struggle is always towards mass marketing. In America the cycle is, Revolt-Packaging of Revolt-Mass Marketing- Dilution of Revolt- Insipid Mimicry-New Revolt. Everybody makes money and has a good time (supposedly) The classic American quote is by Groucho Marx, " I'd never join a club that would want me as a member!"
