LACANIAN INK 11

"Look here," he said, "is Joyce saying symptomy?"
----Jacque Lacan

". . .the old semetomyplace and jupetbackagain. . ."
------James Joyce

We are all part of a World Wide Wake, a web of "semetomyplace," of spaces that flicker between the "crack" of perfect jouissance and the "Fin" of the End--the circut that dials Joyce via Lacan. During this call one of them laughs and other hangs up--and re-calls again--each of them seeking to reach that real space where communication is nolonger necessary because the symptom "says nothing to anyone." LACANIAN INK 11 is a meta-lapsus, a re-cording, which brings together different attempts at a topology of the symptom-as-unanalyzable endings.

The always/already Doubles of Lacan speak first: Jacques-Alain Miller , and Mr. PopularSinthome, Slavoj Zizek--one sending the party message and second the post-party message--and it's always the same jokes. It would be more fitting if these Doubles were to remain silent for a year and let the Other(s) resume the question of the symptom. The truth-effect of the journal comes after we hang-up on these two wrong numbers--Patrick Healy, "Joyce: Through the Lacan Glass," and Adrian Dannatt, "The Crack," map the impossibilty of an end to our Wake since we, Joyce, and Lacan flow in the endless oscillation between binary of the Father and Crack. For Healy Joyce attempted to become the Father-in-disapearence, the Father-at-the-End, as endless frabrication of ex-communications. While Dannatt opens the question of 'Looking for the Crack' which is both a discourse about the Ur-vagina, entertainment, and of an addiction that has no end--because it has no End. A fine footnote to Avital Ronell's CRACK WARS.

The central essays during this call are 'My Dinner with Jacques,' and 'Lacan: the End,' both of these works call forth the endless process of the symptom--in one the Master attempts to "fill his hollow tooth," only to be let down, and in the other we fine the "empty place of truth as cause," for here the truth is "the void at the center of the real which is called Thing." It is the empty space of truth which allows us to speak and make in this world of endless endings. In this exchange of calls many answer too soon and others too late--and all forget to remain silent while leaving a message. These two essays create the vital core of this issue and should be read.

As always LACANIAN INK has fiction and art works that crosses over the "void of Being" as knotted ropes that one can dangle on. It is this element of the journal that gives it resonance, it is the hard kernel that makes it different. "Italics" by Raphael Rubinstein and "Next to Nothing," a selection from Lynne Tillman's next novel, frame the question of the End and the impossible in a visceral manner that the question begs for--certainly more so than the essays. The silkscreens by Antonio Muntadas create precise auras of the bite which link the hollow space of the mouth and language of the self at edge of the void--they indeed "Point to the sudden breath" John Yau's haiku logs speaks of. "The Woman Who Filled Up the World Because She didn't Know How to Exist In It," by Jan Avgikos fines the breath between Father-at-the-End and Crack that the works of Lorna Simpson navigate. The incomplete difference between objects and invisibility which condition the body as possessed history--which must always struggle against endless desire of the Master who fails and the Slave who succeeds in the recognition of never being more than the Lack without End. ". . .the old semetomyplace and jupetbackagain . . . ."

Responds:

It would be better not to make your point on the basis of the silence of others, specially if it is the silence of Jacques-Alain Miller, whose speaking makes the field of the lacanian orientation...

tanz -- tanian@worldnet.att.net
Responds:

do i not grasp your profundity or are you merely being coy? at any rate i already apologized at another locale but again: mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. however, do explain: silence? Jacques-Alain Miller? is this not a place of communication? and off the lacanian stage?

James P. McDaniel -- jpmcdani@indiana.edu
Responds:

Your remarks on Zizek and J.-A. Miller are hilarious. And, I suspect, they represent a growing sense of the Tower of Gaggle, the gagged coalition of Lacanians who are forced into submission by the always prolific Zizek (same jokes, same books different titles, etc. Zizek's established himself as the New Master of a discourse practice that should be wary of mastery. He is jouis-sense, to be sure; a thrill to read. However, one grows tired, very tired of it all after a while. So what's next? I understand that R. Grigg is finishing up translation of S17, and perhaps that marks an opportunity of sorts for the leaning Tower of Gaggle to actually say something. I'm ambivalent: what is this symptom of feeling gagged all about, besides the obvious? Is it simply that Zizek & co. keep saturating the symbolic, filling in all the gaps with more jokes (the same jokes, the same books with different titles), thus leaving us nowhere to go but the province of frustrated hysteria? Or is their a seamier desire circulating here, a desire to be the master one has come to despise? Maybe we just want to publish without having to footnote Zizek every other sentence... At any rate, I appreciated your clever essay, and the thumbnail photo in it. All power to the dupe. jpm
